New Members in the International Relations Office [/vc_column_text][vc_separator border_width=”2″][vc_column_text]On the 1st of February 2020, Associate Professor Konstantinos Petridis was appointed as the new Academic Director of the International Relations Office of the Hellenic Mediterranean University. Dr. Petridis is a member of staff of the Department of Electronic Engineering in Chania and research member of Nanomaterials for Printed Electronics & Energy Devices group under the leadership of Prof. Em. Kymakis. Dr. Petridis was awarded in 2015 as an Academic Erasmus Ambassador. He has coordinated nine Erasmus Projects and has participated in eleven. His vision is to make the IRO something more than an …office. 

Two new staff members that have joined the office, on a volunteer basis, are: 

Dr. George Triantafilou (Department of Tourism).  George Triantafyllou holds a PhD degree with honors, from the Business Administration department of the University of the Aegean. His research fields are wine marketing, wine tourism, food & beverage management and food digital marketing.
He graduated from the Advanced School of Tourism Professions of Rhodes (with honors-excellence), from the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management (with excellence), from the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education -ASPETE (with excellence). George contributes a lot with his marketing expertise and his enthusiasm

Mr. Nikolaos Bolanakis (Department of Electronic Engineering).  Bolanakis Emm. Nikolaos is a Ph.D. candidate at the Hellenic Mediterranean University. He is a natural resources and environmental engineer with a master’s in the teaching of informatics. Nikolaos helps the office with his IT knowledge. 

All of us together with Prof. Em. The International Relations Office of Hellenic Mediterranean University actively participated in the planning, coordination, composition, and submission of a proposal on the frame of the European University Initiative. The acronym of the project is ATHENA, Advanced Technology Higher Education Network Alliance. The International Relations Academy is the academic part of the Office. The Office will offer modules in English with topics relevant to all the students, postgraduate or undergraduate, of the Hellenic Mediterranean University including the Incoming Erasmus students. The office plans to invite distinguished scientists and offer online presentations – colloquial talks and webinars for HMU staff and students

The office wants to be something more than an office. The modules currently offered from our office in the next semester are:

  1. Soft and Research Skills Development (3 ECTS) – Ass. Prof. Kon. Petridis
  2. English for academic purposes (2 ECTS) – Dr. Gareth Owens
  3. An Introduction to philosophy – past, present, and future (2 ECTS) – Dr. Poulis
  4. Principles of Management and Leadership for a new age (3 ECTS) – Assistant Professor Alexia Tzortzaki

During the COVID-19 lockdown time, the office did not stop its actions and tried to be next to the HMU incoming and outcoming ERASMUS students. The actions of the office during these two months were highlighted by the State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) – Greek National Agency of the Erasmus Project (please check: shorturl.at/jrFM1). The actions we have taken as an office during this challenging time were the following:

  1. Staying in contact with our outgoing Erasmus students, during the COVID-19 lockdown crisis
  2. Continuous updating our incoming Erasmus students during the COVID-19 lockdown crisis
  3. Secure the implementation of online lectures for our incoming students. We would like to thank all of our Academic staff for their services
  4. Organization of a webinar on online teaching (27th of April, 4th & 7th of May 2020) with more than 700 active participants during the three days the webinar took place. The webinar website has received until now over 5500 views – please check here
  5. An agreement with the edX business online courses platform for the free offer of online modules in their full version until the end of June
  6. Signature of 15 new bilateral agreements during this period with new partners on abroad
  7. The organization of an Erasmus online info session, on the 21st of May 2020 for students at 1900 in zoom
  8. The planning of an Erasmus Week in synergy with the Department of Electronic Engineering from the 11th to the 16th of October in Chania, Crete, Greece. Virtual and Face to Face participation has been arranged for all the interesting stakeholders

The IRO-HMU next activities include:

  1. The creation of a new website
  2. The organization of the online colloquial talks program for the next academic semester in collaboration with the Academic staff
  3. Organize webinars for training and networking with colleagues abroad and in Greece for the Administration staff
  4. Link our actions with the research activities of our Academic staff by helping them build their consortia
  5. Helping our Academics to build their Erasmus consortia along with competitive Erasmus Projects and provide our help & expertise during the writing of their proposals
  6. Work as the main dissemination tool for the Erasmus & Research Projects and the offered Postgraduate degrees
