Grading system and recognition
How grades and ECTS credits work at the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU), for students coming to HMU and for HMU students going abroad.
HMU grading scale
HMU uses a 0–10 grading scale. The minimum passing grade is 5.
| HMU grade | Letter | Description | Greek term |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.50 – 10.00 | A | Excellent | Άριστα |
| 6.50 – 8.49 | B | Very good | Λίαν καλώς |
| 5.00 – 6.49 | C | Sufficient | Καλώς |
| 0 – 4.99 | F | Fail | Ανεπιτυχώς |
Grade distribution tables
A grade distribution table shows how often each passing grade is awarded in a study programme. Partner institutions use it, together with their own table, to convert grades fairly, as recommended by the ECTS Users' Guide. Only passing grades are included, and the pass rate is given separately.
Tables are published per department. The first one is from the Department of Agriculture. Tables for the other departments will be added as data become available.
Department of Agriculture – undergraduate programme, academic year 2022–23
| HMU grade | Theory courses | Laboratory courses |
|---|---|---|
| 9 – 10 | 11.96% | 20.64% |
| 8 – 9 | 12.64% | 20.82% |
| 7 – 8 | 18.14% | 17.99% |
| 6 – 7 | 18.83% | 17.91% |
| 5 – 6 | 38.44% | 22.65% |
| Average passing grade | 6.68 | 7.34 |
| Pass rate | 63.92% | 83.20% |
Percentages are shares of all passing grades awarded. The pass rate is the share of examined students who passed. Source: Annual Internal Evaluation Report 2022–23, Department of Agriculture (in Greek).
Departments without a course-grade table yet: distribution of final degree grades
For some departments, the only published data are the final degree grades of their graduates. A final degree grade is the average of all course grades, so it is less spread out than individual course grades. These tables are given for information until course-grade tables are available.

Students coming to HMU
- Credits. HMU uses ECTS. A semester corresponds to 30 ECTS credits and a full academic year to 60.
- Courses. The ECTS credits, language of instruction and full outline of every course taught in English are published in the course catalogue.
- Transcript of Records. Before you leave, meet your HMU Academic Coordinator and ask for your Transcript of Records. It lists your courses, ECTS credits and grades on the HMU scale above, and it is sent directly to your home institution.
- Converting your grades. Your home institution converts HMU grades to its own scale, using the grading scale and the grade distribution tables above.
HMU students going abroad
- Before you go. The correspondence between the courses you take abroad and the courses of your study programme is approved before your mobility and recorded in your Learning Agreement. Approval is based on learning outcomes, level and workload (ECTS). A word-for-word match of course content is not required.
- If your courses change. Inform your Erasmus Academic Coordinator without delay, so that the change is approved and added to your Learning Agreement.
- When you return. Submit the Transcript of Records of the receiving institution. Courses completed successfully as in your Learning Agreement are recognised automatically. There is no re-examination and you do not need to submit a new application.
- Your grades. Grades obtained abroad are converted to the HMU scale in line with the ECTS Users' Guide, taking into account the grading scale of the receiving institution.
- Refusal. Recognition may be refused only if the required documents were not submitted, if there is a substantial deviation from the Learning Agreement, or in case of academic fraud.
