About the list
The database is updated every year using Scopus data. The 2026 edition (Version 9, published on 7 October 2026) uses the Scopus snapshot of 1 August 2026. It has two lists: a career-long list, which reflects the citation impact of a scientist’s whole publishing career up to the end of 2025, and a single-year list, which reflects the impact of citations received during 2025.
Scientists are ranked with a composite citation indicator (c-score) that combines total citations, the h-index, the co-authorship-adjusted hm-index and citations to papers as single, first and last author. They are classified into 20 scientific fields and 174 subfields, and are included when they are among the top 100,000 scientists overall or in the top 2% of their subfield.
