ATHENA Talks | Sustainable Production: Learning to Live with Salinity in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta

October 20, 2026

Friday, 23 October 2026 | 10:00 CET | Online

The ATHENA European University is pleased to announce an upcoming ATHENA Talk within the Sustainable Production Cluster, featuring Dr. Dang Kieu Nhan, Principal Researcher at the Mekong Institute, Can Tho University, Vietnam.

From Controlling to Living with Salinity: Lessons for Sustainable Agricultural Adaptation from the Vietnamese Mekong Delta

Climate change, rising sea levels, and increasing soil salinity are posing significant challenges to agricultural production worldwide. Traditional approaches focusing on controlling environmental conditions are increasingly being reconsidered in favour of adaptive and sustainable strategies.

In this ATHENA Talk, Dr. Dang Kieu Nhan will present experiences from the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, illustrating how agricultural communities are transitioning from attempts to control salinity towards developing agricultural systems capable of adapting to changing environmental conditions.

The presentation will offer valuable perspectives on climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable land and water management, and agricultural adaptation, highlighting lessons that may also be relevant to other vulnerable regions, including the Mediterranean.

Why Participate?

This session provides an opportunity for researchers, academics, students, and professionals to:

  • Explore innovative approaches to sustainable agricultural adaptation.
  • Understand the relationship between climate change, salinity, and food production.
  • Exchange knowledge and perspectives between Southeast Asia and Europe.
  • Identify opportunities for interdisciplinary research and international collaboration.
